Here are the main scholarships I'd point a Hong Kong student towards.</p><p><strong>Government and major schemes</strong></p><p>The Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme (HKSES) covers tuition up to HK$250,000 a year, plus a means-tested bursary of up to HK$200,000 a year. In return, you commit to working in Hong Kong for at least two years after graduating. The Jardine Scholarship is available at selected Oxford and Cambridge colleges, comes with no bond attached, and is awarded on academic achievement, leadership and involvement beyond the classroom.</p><p><strong>Bond-free and subject-specific awards</strong></p><p>The Kwok Scholarship fully funds two outstanding candidates a year, but only for PPE or social science subjects connected to public service. The Amy Li Scholarship supports international students in maths, physics, engineering or chemical engineering at Cambridge, and you're considered automatically. The D.H. Chen Foundation Scholarship funds strong students with financial need and adds internship grants of up to £2,500.</p><p><strong>Full-cost scholarships</strong></p><p>A couple of schemes cover essentially everything. The Swire Scholarship, for Hong Kong permanent residents, pays fees plus around £14,500 of maintenance and airfare between Hong Kong and London. The Prince Philip Scholarship, for Cambridge undergraduates, covers full costs, fees, accommodation, living expenses and return airfare.</p><p><strong>How I'd approach applying</strong></p><p>Read each scheme's eligibility carefully, because they differ on subject, residency and whether a work bond applies, and note which need a separate application versus automatic consideration. Then map the deadlines early, since some fall well before or around your university application, and a missed date closes a door that money can't reopen.</p><p><strong>Final thoughts</strong></p><p>If you're a Hong Kong student worrying about the cost, please don't rule Oxbridge out before you've looked properly, several of these schemes cover the whole thing, and more exist beyond this list.
